Precedent for School of Architecture
Alvar Aalto, Villa Marea
As my theory is focussed on the relationship between architecture and the natural environment, I wanted to choose a building and plan which had a strong emphasis on natural materials and open spaces. The building wrapping around a central courtyard is what drew me to this particular plan, and influenced the way I arranged the spaces. I also liked how compact the interior of the building is, and how it almost forces its users to move outside for more room. Additionally, the extensive use of timber cladding ties the structure into the natural environment, relating to my theory.
